New Dems Blast Trump’s 25 Percent Tax on American Families
Today, New Democrat Coalition Chair Brad Schneider (IL-10), Vice Chair for Policy Nikki Budzinski (IL-13), and Vice Chair for Communications Marc Veasey (TX-33), issued a statement in response to the Trump Administration’s imposition of a 25 percent tariff – a tax that’s paid by American consumers – on all imported goods from Canada and Mexico, and a 10 percent tariff on all goods from China:
“Today, President Trump announced a 25 percent tax on the goods that hardworking American families rely on. This action will increase inflation, spike the price of everyday items across the board, and tank American manufacturing.
“President Trump’s personal attacks on our most reliable trade relationships will raise prices for American consumers on everything from gas, to groceries, to materials for new homes. Thanks to Trump, the weekly trip to the store will cost American families far more than in the past for fruits, vegetables, beef, poultry, eggs, bread, and more.
“And if raising taxes on Americans wasn’t enough, Trump’s tariffs will also impose a tax hike that will raise production costs for auto manufacturers and farmers, rocking the economy and forcing mass layoffs of American workers.
“This is not guesswork, we’ve seen this playbook from Trump before. The trade wars President Trump started in his first term cost American families and businesses billions of dollars.
“The American people asked for, and need, lower prices. Instead, Trump is waging a war on their savings and bank accounts. New Dems will not stand for this. We will continue fighting to advance commonsense solutions that will actually lower costs and ensure the U.S. remains a global economic leader.”
